How to read the data
The figures on this site come from public-source pop-up records and Seoul public data. Each source counts something different and has its own limits. Please read the notes below alongside the figures.
Pop-up records
- What it counts
- Pop-ups held in Seongsu, gathered from public sources with the same pop-up merged into one record. Counted by start date.
- Source and unit
- We combined pop-up information platforms (Popply, Popga, HeyPop), the official social accounts and websites of brands and venues, press releases and news articles, and magazines, and merged the same pop-up into one record (2021-10-15 to 2026-10-17, collected 2026-10-17). Pop-ups with no official source found are marked "Original source unverified". New pop-ups are added once a week.
- Watch for
- Only pop-ups known through public sources are included. Pop-ups that were never announced are missing.
- Before May 2023 there were no weekly lists or platform data, so records rely mostly on articles and are undercounted.
- For pop-ups after October 16, 2026, pop-up information platforms are not read and only those known through articles and official social accounts are added, so they are counted less than before.
- More records do not mean better results. When comparing periods with different collection coverage, keep this difference in mind.
Estimated sales
- What it counts
- Quarterly sales of permanent stores, estimated by the Seoul Commercial District Analysis Service from card payment data.
- Source and unit
- Seoul Commercial District Analysis Service (Seoul Open Data Plaza), quarterly, KRW.
- Watch for
- These are estimates, not actual sales.
- They are sales of permanent stores and do not indicate pop-up results.
- When you choose a category, only the Seoul business types that match that category are added. Categories with no matching Seoul business type (Exhibitions & entertainment, Other) do not show sales.
Store count
- What it counts
- Store counts from the Seoul Commercial District Analysis Service: all stores, independent and franchise combined.
- Source and unit
- Seoul Commercial District Analysis Service (Seoul Open Data Plaza), quarterly, stores.
- Watch for
- Only stores classified under Seoul service business types are counted.
Street foot traffic
- What it counts
- The number of people passing along streets in the district, as estimated by the Seoul Commercial District Analysis Service.
- Source and unit
- Seoul Commercial District Analysis Service street-level population, quarterly, people.
- Watch for
- It is an estimate and the same regardless of category.
- It is not the number of people who entered a store.
Seoul living population (Korean residents, short-term foreign visitors)
- What it counts
- The number of people inside each 250 m grid cell at a given hour, added up by district share. “Avg. people at an hour” on screen is the hourly average of this value.
- Source and unit
- Seoul living population (Korean residents, short-term foreign visitors), by date and hour, people.
- Watch for
- It is not a daily visitor count. People who live, work or stopped by are all included.
- Seoul masks cells with 3 people or fewer, and these are counted as 0, so values may be lower than reality (a lower bound).
- Gender, age and nationality breakdowns are shares within unmasked cells, so the known share is shown alongside.
District boundaries and split values
- What it counts
- Seongsu is viewed as 10 local districts. Boundaries follow roads and administrative lines.
- Source and unit
- Public figures add each Seoul trade area's value multiplied by the share of its stores inside this district (taken whole at 95% or more). Road and administrative boundaries © OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Watch for
- Districts that span several Seoul trade areas are split estimates and are marked “est.” on screen.
- Pop-up records outside the boundaries are not included in district figures.
No data versus 0
- What it counts
- “No data” means no data has come in for that quarter and district. 0 means there is data and the value is 0.
- Source and unit
- If there is no data for the same quarter a year earlier, the change is also “No data”.
- Watch for
- Values with too few records to calculate reliably (such as typical run) show the record count and a note instead of a value.
When it changes
- What it counts
- Pop-up records are collected and added once a week. Seoul public data is checked and added by a person when a new quarter is released. Living population shows the period that has been loaded.
- Source and unit
- The period and update date of each dataset are in “Data status” below.
- Watch for
- This is not real-time data.
